"Ten Commandments"
The Ten Commandments are not an onerous set of rules we should follow out of fear or guilt.
Rather, the Commandments serve as signposts that point us to the straight
and narrow path while showing us our need for a Savior when we inevitably stray from that path.

1
I am the LORD your God; you shall not have strange gods before me. 2 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. 3 Remember to keep holy the LORD’s Day. 4 Honor your father and mother. 5 You shall not kill. |
6
You shall not commit adultery. 7 You shall not steal. 8 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 10 You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. |
The Catholic Church has a unique understanding of the Ten Commandments, which are considered divine positive law.
Here are the Catholic Ten Commandments:
I. Worship and Love of God 1 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:2-3, Deuteronomy 5:6-7)
2 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. (Exodus 20:4-5, Deuteronomy 5:8-9) II. Respect for Human Life and Dignity
3 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Exodus 20:8, Deuteronomy 5:12)
4 Honor your father and your mother.(Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16)
5 You shall not kill. (Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 5:17) III. Respect for Property and Relationships
6 You shall not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:17, Deuteronomy 5:18)
7 You shall not steal. (Exodus 20:15, Deuteronomy 5:19)
8 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Exodus 20:16, Deuteronomy 5:20) IV. Respect for the Truth and for Others
9 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. (Exodus 20:17, Deuteronomy 5:21)
10 You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. (Exodus 20:17, Deuteronomy 5:21)
These commandments are considered essential for a moral and virtuous life, and are a foundation for Catholic social teaching.
